Tharu ritual vessel H231

A heavy and hard wooden container with ancestor-figure and elephant on top. These objects were used for rituals with salt by the Tharu people in the Terai in Nepal. The movable top has a typical shiny patina, grown after many years of handling. This piece is from 1st quarter 20th century and originates from a French collection.
