A large primal mask (38 cm) made from dense heavy wood. Rolpa district, Lumbini Provence, West Nepal. Outer part of the mask shows an irregular patina of the original wood color and dark areas from handling for a long time. Inner part has a blackish patina after worn during many rituals for a long time. Overall strong features and a great sculptured inner side which is, I am convinced, typical and essential for old authentic primal masks. Early 20th century. Ex. US collection, private collection.
