Our gallery KARAVANSERAI is located in the oldest street of the Netherlands, in the city of Maastricht.
We focus on TRIBAL ART from Africa, Himalaya and South East Asia. We also deal in textiles, tribal rugs, jewellery, furniture and architecture.
NAGA, IFUGAO, MAGAR (TRIBAL NEPAL), TIBET, BATAK, DAYAK, LEGA, MUMUYE, CHAMBA, DOGON, are all keywords for us.

Our personal preference is THE VERY PRIMITIVE ART: LESS IS MORE.
This is clearly visible in our collection. We use the term PRIMITIVE ART in the sense of PURE or PRIMAL ART.

The objects which we select are authentic and made for the indigenous culture.
They have a strong artistic quality, a powerfull form or expression. They are beautified by time and use and above all, they have a SOUL.
Some of the objects were previously published, part of a collection or exhibition, or collected during our travelling.

We acknowledge the importance of TRIBAL ART for the artistic development of ‘man’ and realize that these PRIMITIVE ART OBJECTS should be preserved for the future.
Many of them would have been lost if we had not added value to them, since most of them were just utensils and never ment as art. Even POWER OBJECTS  such as figures and masks, were disregarded if they did not function anymore for one reason or an other.

Maybe we can qualify many objects in our TRIBAL ART COLLECTION as THE MISSING LINK between the PRIMAL ART of prehistoric man, and CONTEMPORARY ART of artists like PICASSO.
